Everyone’s writing reads a little differently. It depends on the way they explain key ideas and the flow of the words used. In On Writing Well Chapter 20, Zinsser explains that voice in writing is a matter of taste. Everyone has a different perspective on the best way to write well, but Zinsser gives advice on what can be done to improve the way voice is used in writing.
He first suggests reading other writers’ work. This serves as research and can show what is possible. He says it is not bad to imitate another writer, as it is part of the creative process. Throughout my writing career, I have found it extremely helpful to read other authors and see how they play with words and sentences. It has given me the ability to write the way I do today and has shaped my style. Sometimes I have even tried to write the same way someone else does just to try it out.
“Find the best writers in the fields that interest you and read their work aloud. Get their voice and their taste into your ear — their attitude toward language.”

Zinsser also says to use words that have “surprise, strength, and precision.” Although taste and style change overtime, good writing will always be good writing. He suggests being certain and exact when writing. I think it is also important to factor in the flow of words.
Learning what Zinsser thinks about voice prompted me to research what else I can do to improve my writing through expressions. Many experts recommend writing extensively to solidify a style that works for you. They also say to determine a point of view and stick to it. Find out why you are writing and be passionate about it.
You can always try out different styles and tones, which is essential to growing as a writer, but remember to stay true to yourself. No one else is going to write exactly the way you do. It’s the beauty of individuality.
